Quan Leads Men's Tennis Trio Honored by Big Ten

ROSEMONT, Ill. โ€“ Three members of the UCLA men's tennis team were recognized Thursday by the Big Ten Conference, which announced its postseason awards as voted on by the league's head coaches. Individual award winners, All-Big Ten and All-Freshman selections and Sportsmanship Honorees were named.

Rudy Quan was tabbed the Freshman of the Year. He also made the All-Big Ten First Team, as well as the All-Freshman Team. Emon van Loben Sels earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team and was also chosen as the Bruins' Sportsmanship Honoree. Kaylan Bigun joined Quan on the All-Freshman Team.

Quan earned the No. 1 spot in UCLA's singles lineup on Feb. 1 and never looked back, going 6-1 in conference matches. He went 10-4 in dual-match play, with five of his wins coming opposite nationally-ranked players. In the final 10 days of the regular season, Quan beat No. 9 Ozan Baris of Michigan State (6-1, 6-2 โ€“ April 13), No. 63 Calvin Mueller of Nebraska (3-6, 6-3, 6-1 โ€“ April 20) and No. 80 Will Cooksey of Michigan (6-3, 6-3 โ€“ April 11). Quan was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week a league-best three times during the regular season.

The team leader with 15 dual-match doubles victories, van Loben Sels had an 11-3 singles record during the regular season. He posted an 8-1 singles mark in Big Ten contests. The Sacramento, Calif. native was named Big Ten Player of the Week on April 2 after logging a 3-0 doubles record and 2-0 singles mark that included a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over No. 88 Vlad Breazu of Oregon (March 29). With Gianluca Ballotta, van Loben Sels established a potent partnership that prevailed 10 times in the Bruins' final 12 matches.

Bigun won six of his eight singles decisions in Big Ten play. He received Big Ten Freshman of the Week acclaim for the second time on Wednesday after clinching a pair of road wins, the second of which a 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(6) marathon result over Nebraska's Nikolay Sysoev. Bigun's marquee singles victory came Feb. 16, when he downed No. 32 Maxi Homberg of Pepperdine 6-2, 6-3.
