Men's Tennis Downs Gauchos to Start NCAA Play
May 02, 2025 | Men's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. โ The UCLA men's tennis team earned a 4-0 win against UC Santa Barbara in NCAA Championships first-round play Friday at Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bruins next face host and 11th-seeded California Saturday (1 p.m. PT). The Golden Bears defeated Boise State 4-1 in Friday's second match.
The Bruins (17-8) narrowly claimed the doubles point after two matches went to tiebreakers. The Gauchos (18-5), regular-season champions of the Big West, won three singles first sets before the sweep was completed. Kaylan Bigun, Spencer Johnson and clincher Giacomo Revelli notched straight-set singles victories.
The tandem of Revelli/Alexander Hoogmartens broke the serve of Gianluca Brunkow/Lucca Liu for a 4-3 advantage on the doubles court and ultimately prevailed 6-4. The Court 3 contest was destined for a tiebreaker, which Diogo Morais/Charlie Underwood of UCSB seized after taking the final seven points from Gianluca Ballotta/Emon an Loben Sels for a 7-6(5) victory.
As the Court 2 match finished, another tiebreaker was just beginning on Court 3. Johnson/Aadarsh Tripathi collected the final four points to beat Conrad Brown/Dominique Rolland 7-6(2). Johnson and Tripathi have won all six of their decisions as a partnership.
Bigun continued to shine in singles play, winning his seventh consecutive finished match. The latest was a 6-3, 6-2 display versus Lucca Liu on Court 3 that put UCLA up 2-0.
No. 35 Johnson edged out Underwood in a first-set tiebreaker on Court 5 and rode that to a 7-6(3), 6-2 win. Since returning to the singles lineup April 18 following an extended absence, Johnson is 3-1.
For the third time in as many postseason singles matches played, Revelli delivered the fourth point. The senior overcame a 3-5 second-set deficit, as well as a set point, to defeat Matei Gavrea 6-3, 7-5 on Court 6 and send his team into the second round.
