
No. 1 UCLA Advances to Overnght MPSF Invitational Championship Game

LOS ANGELES --ย No. 1 UCLA (13-0) posted two big wins to advance to the championship game of the 2025 Overnght MPSFย Invitational on Saturdayย at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins opened with a 19-12 win over No. 11 UC Davis in the morning and then rallied to defeat fourth-ranked Stanford, 13-12, late afternoon. The Bruins improved to 23-0ย all-time against the UC Davis Aggies and to 85-92 against the Stanford Cardinal.
UCLA had 11 different players score, increasing that total to 11-of-13 games this season with double digit scorers (13 vs. Navy, 10 vs. UC Davis, 11 at UC San Diego, 10 vs. California Baptist University, 11 vs. George Washington, 10 vs. Fordham, 15 vs. Bucknell, 11 vs. Harvard, 11 vs. Pepperdine, 15 vs. Redlands, and 11 vs. UC Davis).
In the win over UC Davis (5-5), sophomore Ryder Dodd scored a game-high four goals and added threeย assists for a total of seven points. Redshirt juniors Ben Larsen (career-high-tying) and Frederico Jucá Carsalade each scored hat tricks for the first time this season. Freshman Jackson Harlan was the only other Bruin to score multiple goals against the Aggies with two in the win.
Redshirt sophomore Nate Tauscher got the starting nod and played the majority of the game, tallying seven saves, three steals and an assist while allowing eight scores. Redshirt freshman Nick Tovani came on in relief, playing the final 5:32 of the fourth quarter, registering one save and one steal while giving up three scores. One goal against was credited to Ryder Dodd on a failed 7-on-6 attempt.
The Bruins got off to a slow start against the Aggies in the 8:00 a.m. game and led 5-4 at the end of the first period. But UCLA responded with a 5-0 second quarter to build a 10-4 lead at halftime. UC Davis won the third period, 4-3, to trim the lead to 13-8 heading into the final stanza. The Bruins won the fourth period, 6-4, to provide the 19-12 final.
In the come-from-behind win over Stanford (7-1), UCLA trailed by as many was three goals (10-7) with 2:41 left in the third quarter. The Bruins still trailed, 12-11, when junior Ben Liechty scored a power play goal off a feed fromย Jucá Carsalade to tie the game at 12-12 with 3:16 remaining in the game. With the game still tied, sophomore Peter Castillo drew a penalty thatย Jucá Carsaladeย converted to give the Bruins their first lead of the game at 13-12 with 1:14 to go. A couple of big defensive saves from Tauscher would secure a Bruin victory.
Ben Liechty would score a career-high-tying four goals in the win over the Cardinal on just four shots.ย Jucá Carsaladeย tallied a personal-best six assists to go with the game-winning goal for a career-best total of seven points. Ryder Dodd was the only other Bruin to score multiple goals against Stanford with two in the victory.
Tauscher again got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying nine saves and one steal while surrendering 12 goals.
The Cardinal held a 5-4 lead after the first period, but the Bruins won the second quarter, 3-2, to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the break. Stanford won the third period, 3-1, to take a 10-8 lead into the final frame. The Bruins responded like champions, winning the fourth period, 5-2, to complete the 13-12 comeback victory.
