LOS ANGELES - Behind a perfect 10 on vault from Jordan Chiles and a pair of 9.975s on beam from Chiles and Ciena Alipio, No. 9 UCLA cruised to a 197.325-195.250 win over Nebraska in the team's Big Ten opener. Chiles led a UCLA all-around podium sweep with a winning score of 39.675. Tiana Sumanasekera placed second with a career-best 39.400, and Katelyn Rosen was third with a 39.175.
The Bruins won every event, with Chiles taking first on vault with her perfect 10 and tying with Sullivan on uneven bars with a 9.900 and with Alipio on beam with a 9.975. Sullivan, Alipio and Sumanasekera tied for first on floor with scores of 9.875, each taking home their first career floor victory.
"It was very special to see her just nail it here today in the first meet in Pauley," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald about Chiles. "To get the 10 was huge. This was her first 10 on vault. Super exciting way to start the meet, and I'm just really proud of the work she's put in to be able to nail that vault."
UCLA started the meet with a 49.250 on vault that was back-loaded by Sullivan's career-high 9.900 and Chiles' perfect 10. Chiles, who has scored 9.975 on vault on three previous occasions, finally received a perfect mark and is now just one beam 10 away from a career Gym Slam of scoring perfect 10s on all four apparatus.
Leading by just two-tenths after the first rotation, the Bruins began to ease ahead in rotation two, scoring 49.325 on uneven bars. UCLA posted steady scores on the event, with each competitor earning 9.825 or higher. Sullivan and Chiles once again led the team, each scoring meet-winning 9.900s.
Rotation three belonged to the Bruins, who scored 49.625 on beam, the sixth-highest score on that event in school history. Rosen led off with a 9.900, a score that was matched by Sumanasekera. Mika Webster-Longin scored a career-high 9.875, then Chiles and Alipio went back-to-back 9.975s, each earning a 10 from one of the two judges.
With a nearly two-point lead over Nebraska, UCLA finished up on floor exercise and scored 49.125, with Alipio, Sumanasekera and Sullivan topping their career-highs with 9.875s to take first place honors.
The Bruins will compete next at Michigan State on Sunday, Jan. 25. The meet will be televised live on FOX at 10am PT.
