Bruins Set Two School Records in Dual With USC

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA swimming and diving team set two school relay records in a dual meet against crosstown rivals USC, but fell 174-126 on Friday at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
UCLA's 200 medley relay squad opened the meet in dramatic fashion, taking the top spot in the event, and touching the wall in 1:35.15. The Bruin quartet of Fay Lustria, Sarah Bennetts, Jada Duncan and Claudia Yovanovich combined to set a new school record in the event in the process.
Applejean Gwinn followed the relay with a second-place showing in the 1000 free. The sophomore touched the wall in 9:50.72
The Bruins swept their way through the 100 backstroke, as Yovanovich, Fay Lustria and Rosie Murphy took the top three spots in the event. Yovanovich touched the wall in 52.28, followed by Lustria in 52.43, while Murphy finished third in 52.83.
Jada Duncan continued her strong freshman campaign with a win in the 50 free, touching the wall in 21.98, while Alexis Schaffer took third in 22.68.
In the 10th event of the day the 200 back, Murphy earned her first event win of the day, taking the win in 1:51.84, beating the field by almost four seconds.
Duncan added another win for the Bruins in the 100-yard butterfly. The freshman earned the win in 51.91 while Lustria took third overall in the race in 53.63.
In the final individual event of the day Murphy finished in second in the 200 IM. The senior touched the wall in 1:55.89 to claim second place.
As for the 400 free relay, UCLA claimed its second school record of the meet to wrap up competition on Friday. The Bruins, who had already set a relay school record earlier on in the meet, took home a second relay school record.
The quartet of Gizem Guvenc, Yovanovich, Schaffer and Duncan combined to touch the wall in 3:13.56, earning the event win and setting a new school record.
Up Next: UCLA returns to action for senior day on Saturday. The Bruins will take on Nevada at 11 am PT from the Spieker Aquatics Center.
