No. 1 UCLA Beats No. 8 Concordia in MPSF Tournament Quarterfinals, 3-0

PROVO, Utah โ The No. 1 UCLA men's volleyball program opened the MPSF Tournament with a 3-0 sweep of No. 8 Concordia Irvine in the quarterfinal round. Set scores were 25-23, 25-15, 25-19 on Wednesday evening.
Four Bruins finished with at least six kills, as David Decker and Zach Rama led the way with nine kills each. Cameron Thorne added seven kills on eight swings while sophomore Sean Kelly added six kills.
Senior setter Andrew Rowan paced the offense to a .460 hitting percentage on the night as Rowan dished out 27 assists.
Defensively, UCLA limited Concordia Irvine to a .268 hitting percentage, and tallied eight nblocks as Micah Wong Diallo led the team with six block assists.
After trading points early on the Bruins utilized a 3-1 scoring run to push in front 12-8. Andrew Rowan capped the run with an ace.
The Bruins extended the lead to 19-13, courtesy of an ace from Kelly. Concordia rebounded after the ace, and went on a 3-0 scoring run to close the gap to 19-16, forcing a timeout from the Bruins. Concordia did not stop there and evened the set at 19-19, and UCLA took another timeout.
Trent Taliaferro came in to serve with UCLA leading 20-19, and served an ace to put the Bruins in front by two, 21-19.
UCLA closed out the opening set with a kill from Decker, taking the opening set 25-23, and opened up a 1-0 set lead.
As for the second set, the Bruins jumped in front 9-6, courtesy of a 3-1 run. A kill from Decker was followed by an attack error and a service error from the Golden Eagles.
UCLA then took a 11-6 advantage when Rama hammered home his seventh kill of the night. Back-to-back aces from Thorne, followed by a triple block pushed UCLA in front by eight, 19-11. UCLA finished the second set with three aces.
The Bruins made it 22-13 when Rama tallied another kill, before closing out the set 25-15 courtesy of an attack error from the Golden Eagles, giving UCLA a 2-0 set lead heading into the third set.
Concordia opened the third set with a 6-4 lead before a service error from the Golden Eagles and a kill from Thorne through the middle tied the set at 6-6.
UCLA edged in front 15-11 with a triple block from Decker, Rowan and Rama. Back-to-back kills from Decker pushed the Bruins in front by seven, 19-12.
The Bruins ended the match with kills from Micah Wong Diallo and Decker, taking the third set 25-19, and the match 3-0.
Up Next: UCLA will play the winner of the BYU and Stanford match in the MPSF Tournament semifinal on Thursday. First serve is set for 6:30 pm PT (7:30 pm MT) and the match will be broadcast on B1G+.
