Men's Tennis Sweeps Arizona State to Start NCAA Play
May 01, 2026 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO โ The UCLA men's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 win in its NCAA Championship opener against Arizona State Friday at Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Bruins claimed the doubles point and never looked back, collecting each of their singles victories in straight sets.
Spencer Johnson sealed the result with an ace, completing a two-win day. Also triumphant for the Bruins in singles action were Rudy Quan and Emon van Loben Sels. The Sun Devils completed their season with a 17-11 record.
UCLA advances to face No. 15 seed and host San Diego in Saturday's second round. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT. The Toreros defeated UC Santa Barbara 4-2 Friday.
The doubles pair of Andy Nguyen/Aadarsh Tripathi set the tone for UCLA, taking six of seven games from Milos Mikovic/Ofek Shimanov on Court 1. Then, with the Court 3 contest in a tiebreaker, Johnson/Bengt Reinhard triumphed over Shu Matsuoka/Niels Villard 6-4 to clinch the initial point. Reinhard/Johnson has won all three of its matches, which have coincided with the start of postseason play.
The Bruins posted a clean sweep of singles first sets and quickly neared victories on four courts. The decisions were ultimately in the top-court matchups, which ended almost simultaneously.
No. 80 Quan was first to finish, topping Mathis Bondaz 6-3, 6-0 on Court 2. No. 40 van Loben Sels then turned in a 6-4, 6-1 win versus Matsuoka on Court 2. Quan (14-3) and van Loben Sels (15-4) have combined for 29 dual victories on the year.
Johnson's first clincher since UCLA's home win against USC (March 13) capped a 6-1, 6-4 display opposite Ofek Shimanov on Court 1. The Bruins have now swept the top three singles courts nine times in 2026.
