Women's Swimming & Diving Ends Season with 16th Place Finish at NCAAs

UCLA at the NCAA Championships - The UCLA Bruins finished 16th with a score of 83 at the 1999 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Georgia. The Bruins had 10 swimmers receive All-America honors for a total of 24 All-America certificates. UCLA's 200 medley relay team of Nicole Beck, Amber Wines, Beth Goodwin and Keiko Price broke the school record with a 1:40.98 mark. Sophomore All-American Beth Goodwin broke the school record in the 100 fly, registering a time of 53.90 and finishing ninth. Freshman Katie Younglove showed how bright UCLA's future will be, finishing fourth in the 200 fly with the second-fastest time in school history (1:57.88). UCLA's 200 and 400 medley relay teams both finished 10th, while the Bruins' 200 and 400 free relay teams placed 14th. Other top finishes include 12th in the 100 fly by Younglove and in the 50 free by Price. Freshmen Beck, Angela Belloni, Lyndee Hovsepian, Katie Ryan, Julia Voitovitsch and Younglove, sophomore Goodwin, juniors Price and Wines and senior Becky Thompson all received All-America honors. The Bruins lose only Thompson to graduation and will return a talented and more experienced class of All- Americans for next years run for a top-10 finish at NCAAs.
Bruins Finish Fifth At Pac-10s - UCLA took fifth place at the 1999 Women's Pac- 10 Swimming & Diving Championships with a score of 856.50. Junior All-American Keiko Price claimed the 100 free title and finished third in the 50 free. This is the 12th straight year UCLA has had an individual Pac-10 champion and the 24th overall individual Pac-10 title for the Bruins. Freshman Katie Younglove recorded an impressive second place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.35. UCLA competed well, with 17 swimmers recording career-best times.
Baghramian Scores Big at Zone E Diving Championships - Sophomore Anne Baghramian finished third on one-meter at the Zone E Diving Championships with a season- best mark of 402.80, which qualified her for her first NCAA Championship. Other notable performances included Delilah More's seventh place mark on platform and Baghramian's seventh place finish on three-meter.
The Future's So Bright - The 1999 UCLA freshmen class was one of the biggest and most talented in years. The 23 Bruins made a big impact for UCLA during the 1998-99 season. Six Bruin freshmen earned All-America honors and seven of the eleven competitors for UCLA at NCAAs were freshmen. Top-times this season were held by five freshmen in nine events.
Academic Standouts - The UCLA women's swimming and diving team continually excels in the classroom, winning the UCLA athletic department's Outstanding GPA Award almost every year. Four swimmers and two divers were rewarded for their academic excellence with Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Price earned first-team honors and also received the Academic Excellence award from her team. Swimmers Brighid Dwyer, Courtney Gulledge and Amanda Hall and divers Anne Baghramian and Delilah More earned honorable mention honors.
