No. 3 Softball Hits The Road

LOS ANGELES - UCLA returns to the road this weekend after a brief three-game homestand, this time traveling to Seattle, Wash., for two games against their travel partner, Washington. In 1999, the Bruins and Huskies split the regular-season series, with doubleheader splits in both Seattle and Westwood. The rubber game came in the form of the NCAA Championship game, which UCLA won 3-2, to claim its eighth NCAA title. The Bruins lead the all-time series against the Huskies, 22-10.
Bruins Drop Two in Pac-10 Weekend Homestand
Two UCLA errors opened the door on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium, and Arizona walked right in. The Wildcats handed the Bruins their first Pac-10 loss of the season, a 6-4 loss that included home runs by Bruins Julie Marshall and Tairia Mims. Despite the loss, Natasha Watley also stole her 21st base of the season, meaning that she needs just four more swipes to tie Christie Ambrosi for the UCLA single-season record.
The weekend held two games against No. 4 Arizona State, a series the two teams would split. On Saturday, the Bruins were able to jump on a tired Sun Devil squad, which had arrived from Seattle at 3 a.m. the previous night, and earn a 5-1 win. Stephanie Swenson took to the circle for the Bruins, recording her ninth win of the season.
On Sunday, Bruin All-American Courtney Dale returned to the pitching circle for the first time since being diagnosed with a torn labrum in her pitching (right) shoulder. Dale pitched a pre-arranged two innings, allowing two hits while holding ASU scoreless. Amanda Freed then took over for the remaining five innings, retiring six straight before allowing the only run of the game, a home run by Erin Wardein. UCLA had an opportuntiy to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, when an intentional walk to Julie Adams loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately, the Bruins were unable to capitalize, as Dale struck out and Mims fouled out to end the game.
This Week's Schedule - April 17-23
The Bruins return to the road after last weekend's brief homestand, heading to Seattle, Wash., for two games against the top-ranked Washington Huskies. Game time is 2 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports West, and will be re-played on Sunday at 10 a.m. on FOX Net West 2.

Bruin Softball Televised Saturday
UCLA's second game next weekend in Seattle, Wash., against Washington will be televised live on FOX Sports Net. Locally, the game can be seen live on Fox Net West at 1 p.m. Saturday, and will be tape-delayed at 10 a.m. Sunday on Fox Net West 2. Jim Watson and Angie Arlati will be calling the action. Several Bruins are on the move in the UCLA record books. Most notably, freshman Natasha Watley is already second on UCLA's single-season list and tied for tied for sixth on the career list with 21 stolen bases through 39 games played. She needs four more swipes to tie Christie Ambrosi's single-season record of 25 stolen bases, set in the 1999 season.
Julie Marshall has taken over the Bruins career record for RBIs, and needs just four more RBI to become the first Bruin to ever record 200 career RBI. Marshall is also currently ranked second all-time in home runs (43), fifth in doubles (39), fifth in at-bats (685), eighth in runs scored (122) and hits (227) and tied for seventh in games played (226).
Julie Adams is also ranked in several categories, including third in home runs (38), third in RBIs (153), 10th in runs scored (109), 10th in hits (206), 13th in doubles (28), 16th in at-bats (580), and 16th in games played (196).
Three additional speedsters, Lupe Brambila, Lyndsey Klein and Amanda Freed, join Watley on the all-time career stolen bases list, as Brambila checks in with 22 (fifth), Klein has 19 (tied, ninth) and Freed has 18 (11th). Brambila also has double-digit swipes this season, with 15 through April 10 and ranks third on the single-season list with that total.
Despite the fact that Klein will be completing a two-year Bruin career this season, she will see her name in several Bruin career lists. She is tied for ninth in doubles (31), 15th in RBI (81), tied for 16th in runs scored (84), and tied for 20th with four triples.
Head Coach Sue Enquist
The reigning Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Enquist is in her 21st year as a member of the UCLA coaching staff and 25th season as either a player or coach at UCLA. She solely took over the role of UCLA's head coach in 1997, following the retirement of longtime Bruin coach Sharron Backus. The two served as co-head coaches from 1989-96. Following a brilliant UCLA playing career (1975-78), Enquist was away from the Bruins for only one season before returning as an assistant coach in 1980. She held that position for nine years (1980-88) before being elevated to co-head coach prior to the 1989 season. Since then, the Bruins have compiled a 565-110(.837) record.
Schedule Summary
A 1998 vote by the Pac-10 coaches has reduced the 2000 conference schedule by seven games, and for that reason, the Bruins played in more tournaments than in past years. The Pac-10 coaches decision was based upon the strength of the conference, and allowing the lower-division teams in the conference to earn more quality
