No.2 Bruins to Host MPSF Quarterfinal Match on Apr. 23

The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball will begin its post-season on Saturday night by hosting an MPSF quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins (25-4, 18-4) will meet the winner of the Apr. 20 MPSF play-in match featuring Cal State Northridge (10-12, 17-13) and Stanford (10-12, 11-14). That match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cal State Northridge.

In other MPSF quartefinal matches scheduled for Apr. 23, sixth-seeded UC Santa Barbara travels to No.3 seed BYU and fifth-seeded Long Beach State visits No.4 seed Hawaii. The winners advance to the semifinals.

Top-seeded Pepperdine has a bye into the semifinals, which it will host on Thurs., Apr. 28.

Saturday's UCLA match will be broadcast live on uclabruins.com as well as on www.mpsports.org/audio.

Tickets for the match will be sold at the door on Saturday night.

In the conference playoffs, dating back to 1995, the Bruins have captured the MPSF Tournament title four times and boast a record of 17-4. Overall, the Bruins have won 24 conference championships in men's volleyball since 1964.

The Bruins have defeated CS Northridge three times this season and Stanford twice.

In their most recent victory over the Matadors on Apr. 6, the Bruins were extended to four games and won Game 2, 33-31. Senior Paul Johnson and sophomore Matt McKinney combined for 37 kills as UCLA hit .329 and out-blocked the Matadors, 13.5-7.5. UCLA also served eight aces to CSUN's three.

In their Apr. 2 victory against Stanford at Maples Pavilion, the Bruins won two extra point games: Game 2, 35-33 and Game 4, 36-34. In his first match after returning from the basketball team, McKinney came off the bench and pounded 15 kills (.462) and recorded a career-high of seven total blocks (inlcuding four solos) to key the victory. The Bruins won this match at the net by out-blocking the Cardinal 15.0-9.0.
