Anjelica Selden Named UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week

May 23, 2005

Freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) of the UCLA Softball Team was selected as the UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 16-22.

Selden pitched five complete games at UCLA's NCAA regional, striking out 58 and walking just two during 38 innings in the circle. Friday's game against Loyola Marymount saw Selden strike out 12 without issuing a walk. In Saturday's 11-inning loss to Fullerton, Selden tied then broke DeeDee Weiman's UCLA single-season strikeout record (359 in 1994). Selden went on to record 10 strikeouts in the 11-inning loss, then rebounded to post 14 K's without a walk against UNLV to advance the Bruins to Sunday's championship series. Selden K'd eight in a two-hit shutout as UCLA forced the "if game" with a 6-0 win over the Titans. In the winner-take-all championship game, Selden was brilliant once again, striking out 14, including the side in the first and fourth and recording all three outs via strikeout in the seventh.

She now has 404 career strikeouts, making her the only Bruin in history with a 400-K season and only the fifth freshman in NCAA Division I history with a 400-strikeout season (Monica Abbott, Tennessee, 2004, 582; Cat Osterman, Texas, 2002, 554; Lisa Ishikawa, Northwestern, 1984, 469; Selden; Jamie Southern, Fresno State, 2002, 400)

This is Selden's second UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.

Also nominated: John Caulfield, M. Track & Field; Kevin Chappell, M. Golf; Amie Cochran, W. Golf; Brian Schroeder, Baseball.
