Spike/Volleyball Magazine Names Al Scates Coach of the Year

UCLA Head Coach Al Scates earned Coach of the Year honors and four players from the Bruins' 2006 NCAA championship team were named All-Americans, Spike/Volleyball Magazine announced in its Summer 2006 issue.
Scates guided the Bruins to their 19th NCAA title and UCLA's 98th overall team title on May 6. The Bruins finished the season with a 14-match winning streak, captured the MPSF Tournament crown and compiled a 26-12 record. In 44 years of coaching, Scates has been named Coach of the Year six times by various volleyball publications and organizations.
UCLA junior opposite Steve Klosterman was named 2nd Team All-American by the magazine after leading the Bruins in scoring and earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the NCAA Championship.
Sophomore libero Tony Ker earned 3rd Team All-America honors after leading the Bruins in digs and passing better than 97% of his service receptions.
Senior quick hitter Nick Scheftic and junior outside hitter Paul George earned Honorable Mention All-America honors. Scheftic was the Bruins' top blocker and George was second to Klosterman with 400 total kills.
