Senior catcher Stacey Nuveman (LaVerne, CA/St. Lucy's Priory HS) of the UCLA Softball Team was selected as the UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Apr. 22-28.
Nuveman, this week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, posted a .667 week at the plate, going 8-for-12 with two doubles, five RBI, a 1.083 slugging percentage, two walks and a home run that tied the NCAA career home run record.
Nuveman blasted the record-tying home run on Saturday night at Stanford, the fourth consecutive hit for the Bruins to start the third inning, giving UCLA a 4-0 lead. It was Nuveman's 249th career game, compared to 271 for Leah Braatz and 251 for Laura Espinoza, the players with whom she currently shares the NCAA career home run record.
Nuveman opened the week's play by starting UCLA's game-winning rally on Wednesday against No. 8 Washington. Her bases-loaded RBI single started the rally that finished two batters later on Claire Sua's grand slam that brought UCLA from a 3-0 deficit to a 5-3 victory. The Washington game was Nuveman's 247th in a Bruin uniform, making her UCLA's all-time leader in career games played.
Friday's game at No. 6 California saw Nuveman go 3-for-4 with two RBI in UCLA's 3-0 win over the Golden Bears. The following night, Nuveman sparked an offensive explosion by UCLA against No. 7 Stanford, with her record-tying home run, a two-run blast that gave the Bruins a 4-0 lead in what would be a 10-run third inning. She would become one of three Bruins to record two hits in the third inning, singling in her second trip to the plate. On Saturday, she was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, as the Bruins went on to record a 13-2 win. Sunday's game was more of the same, as the Cardinal pitched around her in the first, issuing a walk. Nuveman then singled in the third inning, and doubled in the sixth.
This is Nuveman's third UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and her career.
