Amanda Freed
Softball Senior Cypress, Calif. Cypress HS |
Senior outfielder/pitcher Amanda Freed (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) of the UCLA Softball Team was selected as the UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-18.
Freed, this week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, led the Bruins both in the circle and at the plate at the UNLV Classic. Offensively, she was UCLA's top hitter, going 11-for-16 (.688) with 10 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, a home run (against #13 Nebraska), and a 1.063 slugging percentage. Three walks contributed to her .737 on-base percentage, and she did not strike out in any of UCLA's five weekend games. She also had a sacrifice hit and three stolen bases on as many chances to go with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Freed had higher individual offensive totals than the five opponents combined for as a team in runs scored (10 vs. 7), RBIs (7 vs. 6) and stolen bases (3 vs. 2).
In the circle, Freed was 3-0 with wins over No. 12 Alabama, No. 13 Nebraska and No. 4 LSU. She struck out 16 batters, walking one in her 17 innings in the circle. Opponents hit just .169 for the weekend against Freed. Two of the three starts were complete games (Nebraska, Alabama) while she teamed with Keira Goerl for a shutout win against LSU (Freed left the game with a comfortable 7-0 lead in the bottom of the 6th against LSU).
This is Freed's first UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and the fifth of her career.
