Postgame Notes – LSU 34, UCLA 17
Postgame Notes
UCLA at LSU
Sept. 21, 2024
– TE Jack Pedersen reeled in a 20-yard touchdown catch to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. It was a career-long catch (previously: 6 yards) and marked his first-career touchdown reception.
– R-Jr. LB Carson Schwesinger drew his first-career start on Saturday.
– Schwesinger also recorded a career and team-high 12 tackles (previously: 7). It was the second time in three games this year that Schwesinger led UCLA in tackles.
– Schwesinger became the first Bruin with double-digit tackles in a game since Kain Medrano had 10 at Utah on Sept. 23, 2023. He’s the first UCLA player with a dozen tackles since Mo Osling III accomplished the feat against Arizona in 2022.
– Oluwafemi Oladejo started at defensive end, marking his first start at that position as a Bruin.
– Pedersen’s catch marked the first time this season that UCLA scored on its opening drive, and the first time overall since T.J. Harden found the end zone with a 1-yard run in a 38-20 win at USC on Nov. 18, 2023.
– UCLA scored on two drives in the first quarter, the second time this season the Bruins have had a multi-score quarter (third quarter at Hawaii, on Aug. 31).
– Fr. WR Kwazi Gilmer caught the first two passes of his collegiate career on Saturday, both going for 25+ yards. His first-career catch came late in the first quarter, a 29-yard strike that set up a UCLA field goal. He later caught a 32-yard pass to help set up a game-tying touchdown at the end of the second quarter.
– WR Logan Loya caught a touchdown pass near the end of the first half. It was his first touchdown reception of the season, and ninth of his career. Loya has registered at least one touchdown catch in each of the last three seasons (2022-24).
– UCLA QB Ethan Garbers registered two touchdown passes in the first half, the fourth time in his career he’s had multiple TD passes in a half. The Bruins were 4-0 in 2023 when Garbers recorded multiple touchdown passes in a game.
– Garbers finished the game with a single-game career-high 281 passing yards. It’s the second time this year he’s registered a career high in passing yardage, following his 275-yard performance in the season opener at Hawai’i.
– UCLA’s 17 points in the opening two quarters were the team’s most in a single half so far this season, eclipsing the 16 points scored in the second half at Hawai’i on Aug. 31.
– DE Devin Aupiu recorded single-game career highs in tackles (3) and tackles for loss (1.0).
– Saturday’s announced attendance of 100,315 is the largest road crowd the Bruins have played in front of since Sept. 3, 2016 at Texas A&M (100,443).
– A season-high nine different Bruins caught a pass against LSU. All nine of those pass-catchers had at least one reception of 10+ yards.
– UCLA P Brody Richter had a strong day, posting a trio of 50+ yard punts and three punts inside the LSU 20 over four attempts. His opening punt went a game-long 61 yards (returned 10 yards to the LSU 40), and his next three punts were downed at the LSU 8-yard line, 4-yard line, and 5-yard line, respectively.
