John Savage, the UCLA Baseball Head Coach
opening statement
“I thought we did a really good job coming out against Martinez. Martinez is very good; he’s had a very good year. He stretches people out, doesn’t give up many hits. We caught a break in that inning, some things went our way, and then Roman had the big blow obviously. The story tonight, really, was Ian May coming out of the bullpen and getting the big double play. He was in command all evening. His line doesn’t tell you the story with the two earned runs at the end, but I don’t think we’d be where we are tonight without Ian. He threw strikes against a very difficult lineup; he did a nice job.”

on Ian May’s performance
“He’s had some good outings. I would say tonight was probably the biggest one of the year, I don’t know about the best. He’s been good. He’s had some really good starts, some really good outings out of the bullpen. He’s pitched back-to-back several times, been very resilient. He’s stepped up. He wants the ball in the big moments. He was exceptional tonight.”

on the offense over the course of this weekend
“It’s been the offense I’ve seen all year. We’ve had a very consistent lineup with Roch, Vy, Roman, Peyton, AJ, Blake, and Phoenix. They’ve been very consistent. We haven’t had a lot of games where we’ve been shut down; that’s why the Nebraska game was the game that stood out. Again, we’ve had a lot of good at-bats against a good pitcher. We continued that tonight.”

on playing against Jack Martinez

“It was an unorthodox delivery. It was pretty open. He can really land his secondary pitches from strikes; he’s got a good fastball. He’s a tough guy. You get seven off of him in that inning; that was just a rare inning. A couple things went our way; we had a couple hit by pitches. We watched a lot of tape on him, but to our guys’ credit, I thought they executed the plan. They beat a really good pitcher. It was a tough matchup, and I thought we went out and did a really good job. We put a lot of good at-bats together. It seemed like the lineup turned over a lot. It just seemed like a full team effort to knock them out of the game.”

on the pitching going forward

“We’re in pretty good shape. Moss, Randall, Hawk, who’s only thrown one inning this weekend. For the most part, we’re pretty much intact. [Ian May] saved the bullpen. Landon went three, got into the fourth, we were hoping to get four or five out of him. And then I thought it was time to put Ian in there. He stepped up to the challenge. He saved us moving forward. Now, the guys who might have gone back-to-back are fresh and ready for tomorrow.”

UCLA catcher Cashel Dugger

on facing high-strikeout pitchers
“I think it’s just sticking to the approach that we determine before the game and bearing down with two strikes. We’ve been good at that all year, just competing no matter what.“ “

UCLA pitcher Ian May

on his performance tonight
“I felt pretty good tonight. I wanted to go out and get us a win. I would say that this probably was my best outing, in the biggest spot. I just wanted to be out there for the team and get a win tonight.

on coming out of the bullpen
“I like to say there’s nothing different, I think it’s kind of how baseball goes. I take the same mindset and mentality with every time I’m pitching. That’s just how baseball works sometimes.

on tonight’s long innings
“Coach Savage always talks to us as pitchers and says we’ve got to love those innings. Your team is working for you, putting runs on the board for you. If anything, that takes stress off of me on the mound. I love it when there are long innings. I use the bands, shoulder tube to stay loose. But you’re never going to complain when your team is out there putting up runs for you. It makes you want to get back out there and throw a zero on the board for your team.

on Arizona State’s lineup
“They’re a very talented lineup. I’ve pitched against these guys for the past few years, and I played summer ball with a few of the guys as well. I’m pretty familiar with the team. I just went out there and tried to throw my best stuff, and what happened, happened. I’m happy with the result today.
