Fred Bohna is UCLA's only national collegiate wrestling champion. He went undefeated his senior year, was selected the Pac-10 Wrestler of the Year and won the Pac-10 and 1979 NCAA Wrestling Championship in the heavyweight division. As a freshman, Bohna was 20-9-1 at 190 lbs, and as a sophomore, he placed second in the conference. During Bohna's senior year, heavyweight became an "unlimited" class. Despite being outweighed by 90 pounds, the 228-pound Bohna defeated his 318-pound opponent David Klemm to win the NCAA title. Bohna continued to compete internationally following his UCLA career, winning a gold medal in the 1979 Pan American Games. He retired after the 1984 Olympic Games. Bohna passed away on July 9, 2010 after a long battle with cancer.
