Halfback Mel Farr was a first-round draft choice of the NFL's Detroit Lions in 1967 and made an immediate impact, rushing for 860 yards and earning league rookie of the year honors. He played with Detroit through the 1973 season. His sons, Mel Jr. and Mike, both played major roles in UCLA's football success in 1987.

Farr, who has built a successful business empire in and around the Michigan area, was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
