A versatile four-year track letterman for UCLA, Wayne Collett was one of the world's fastest 400-meter runners in the late sixties and early seventies. He won a silver medal in the 400 meters at the 1972 Olympic Games and was ranked among the top four in the world four times in that event between 1967 and 1972. He also held the world record in the 440 hurdles, equaled the world mark for the 440-yard dash and ran the fastest 400 meters in history at sea level when he won the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Collett, who went on to become a practicing attorney and remained active in UCLA affairs, was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
