A long jump and triple jump star on the athletic fields, Willie Banks was an NCAA postgraduate scholar and Top Five student-athlete who went on to graduate from UCLA Law School. During his athletic career, Banks ranked as the United States' top triple jumper five times and ranked among the top eight in world nine times. He set the world record at 58 feet, 11-1/2 inches in 1985 and was named the 1985 sportsman of the year by Olympian Magazine. He was the national TAC triple jump champion four times between 1980 and 1985. Banks was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2001, he set a 45-49 age-group record in the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
