Coach Saldana's postgame comments.
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 by Soccer America, came from behind for the second consecutive game to defeat UC Santa Barbara 3-1 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game today at UCLA's North Athletic Field. Bruin midfielder Sasha Victorine scored his second consecutive game-winning goal in the 55th minute, and midfielder Shaun Tsakiris recorded two assists.
UCSB struck early in the contest, when Jaime Ambriz knocked in a rebounded shot from Sean Herrity past UCLA keeper Nick Rimando at 3:10. The Bruins, however, were quick to respond. At 7:06, junior defender Ryan Lee scored his first goal of the season on a header from a Tsakiris free kick. Victorine scored his eighth goal of the season at 54:13 for the deciding point, chipping in a shot into an empty net. McKinley Tennyson, Jr. followed seven minutes later on a header from another Tsakiris free kick.
UCLA outshot UCSB 14-10 in an extremely physical game that saw each team collect 28 fouls apiece. Six yellow cards were issued during the game (four to UCSB, two to UCLA), and Referee George Noujaim issued two members of the UCSB team yellow cards after the game for dissent.
Rimando made a career-high tying six saves in the contest. UCSB's goalkeeper Stewart Sanders made three.
"We managed to liven things up in the second half, and things got better," said Saldana. "We got McKinley (Tennyson) back on the scoreboard, and our defense was very solid in the second half. Overall, I'm pretty happy with two wins this weekend."
UCLA's record improves to 9-1-0, 2-0-0 in the MPSF. UCSB falls to 7-5-0, 0-2-0. The Bruins' next game will be Friday, Oct. 15 at UNLV.
