WESTWOOD, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 by Soccer America, won its 10th straight game, defeating UC Irvine 1-0 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game today at UCLA's North Athletic Field. Senior forward Martin Bruno scored the game's only goal in the 63rd minute.
UCLA outshot UC Irvine 8-3 in the first half (16-5 in the whole match), but neither team could find the back of the net. In the second half, the Anteaters had a good opportunity to strike first when midfielder Scott Bowman curled a shot to the left corner in the 58th minute. However, UCLA goalkeeper Nick Rimando made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
Five minutes later, Bruin midfielder Sasha Victorine's cross found Ryan Futagaki in front of the net. Futagaki's shot was defelected by Irvine keeper Tyler Reid, and Bruno tapped in the deflection for his fifth goal of the season.
Rimando picked up his fourth shutout of the season. He made four saves in the contest. Reid had five saves in a losing effort.
The Bruins were playing without three key starters - defender Carlos Bocanegra (arthroscopic knee surgery), midfielder Shaun Tsakiris (ill) and forward McKinley Tennyson, Jr. (ill).
"It was a decent performance (having to play with all these injuries and illnesses)," said UCLA head coach Todd Salda?a. "I give the most credit to Ryan Lee - he stepped into Carlos' spot, and he's been solid. The guys coming off the bench now - Tim Pierce and Sean Walker - it's a start for them. It looks like they're going to get more minutes, so hopefully they can build on today a little bit."
UCLA's record improves to 12-1-0, 5-0-0 in the MPSF. UC Irvine falls to 6-9-0, 1-2-0 in the conference. The Bruins' next game will be Sunday, Oct. 24 vs. San Diego State at the North Athletic Field at 1:00 pm.
