No. 2 Men's Soccer Team Falls To No. 21 Washington In MPSF Championship Game

Seattle, Wash. - A goal by freshman defender Scot Thompson 1:05 into the contest gave UCLA an early 1-0 lead against Washington in the MSPF Championship game, but the Huskies scored 16 seconds later and then just before the end of the first half to give Washington a 2-1 victory and its second consecutive MPSF title.

Playing under heavy, steady rain, the Bruins got things off to a great start barely one minute into the game. After Washington keeper James Dickinson deflected McKinley Tennyson's shot, Thompson took the rebound and netted his second goal in as many games. But the Bruins could not celebrate long, as UW defender Bryn Ritchie also scored off a Rees Bettinger deflected shot at 1:29.

The Bruins had a chance to equalize at 24:04 when Washington midfielder Wes Hart was carded for an incidental handball in the box. But Dickinson saved senior midfielder Pete Vagenas' ensuing penalty kick, which was headed for the lower left corner of the goal. Washington forward Greg Foisie scored what would prove to be the game-winner at 43:31, taking great passes by Jake Sagare and Hart and spoiling the Bruins' hopes for a fifth MPSF Championship.

"We're obviously delighted with the result," Washington head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "James played out of his skin today. The conditions were very tough for both teams, we just had to gut it out, and the guys played their hearts out."

UCLA had 20 shots in the game (Tennyson had eight alone), but Dickinson made six saves, five in the second half. The Bruins' Nick Rimando made four saves in the contest. On a bright note for the Bruins, All-American defender Carlos Bocanegra returned to action after missing the last eight games due to a knee injury. Bocanegra played 25 minutes off the bench.

Washington (13-4-2) will next face Mid-Continent Conference winner Oral Roberts in an NCAA play-in game on Sunday, Nov. 14 in Seattle. The winner of that game will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. UCLA (16-2-0) will await an at-large bid into the tournament. The NCAA Championship bracket will be announced on Monday, Nov. 15 at 6:00 pm PT.
