TEMPE, Ariz. - The UCLA women's swimming and diving team lost a very close dual meet at Arizona State on Friday afternoon, falling 122-121 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. It was the Pac-10 opener for the 3-1 Bruins for the 1999-2000 season.
The Sun Devils and Bruins were separated by only a few points heading into the meet's final two races. However ASU got victories from sophomore Riley Mants in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.31) and from its 400 freestyle relay team of Carolyn Adel, Casey Murphy, Alicia Wheelock and Stephanie Elwonger (3:49.38) to ensure victory. The Sun Devils' relay time bested UCLA's by only .59 seconds.
Senior Keiko Price led the Bruins with victories in the 50 (25.87) and 100 (56.36) freestyle. UCLA's top 400 medley relay team also bested all other competitors in a time of 4:10.53.
Both the Bruins and Devils also staged exhibition meets on Friday against the Southern California All-Stars, a squad of elite junior swimmers from the Golden State. The All-Stars defeated ASU 120-84 and UCLA by a 108.5-96.5 margin.
The Bruin women's swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday at Arizona.
