WESTWOOD, Calif. - In a game with both Pac-10 and playoff implications, the No. 17 UCLA women's soccer team shut out Pac-10 rival No. 8 USC 3-0 at UCLA's North Athletic Field this afternoon.
UCLA came up big this afternoon, putting together 15 shots while dominating the Trojans and holding them to only three shots in the entire game.
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Emblem scored first for the Bruins, and her goal later proved to be the game-winner. With 14:45 on the clock, Emblem's shot from 10 yards out found the upper right corner of the net. Forward Tracey Milburn was credited with the assist.
The score remained 1-0 until the half, with UCLA registering eight shots to USC's one.
The Bruins extended their lead to 2-0 when midfielder Venus James cleared the ball and sent it to sophomore forward Staci Duncan, who dribbled down the length of the field, dodged two defenders and fired in a shot from 15 yards out in the 54th minute of play.
UCLA put the match away with 76:03 on the clock when sophomore midfielder Breana Boling connected on a header off midfielder Bethany Bogart's corner kick.
USC goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes pulled down four saves for the Trojans, while UCLA goalkeepers CiCi Peterson and Lindsay Culp each grabbed a save.
This afternoon's match was the final regular-season game for both teams. With today's win, UCLA finishes the regular-season with a 14-4-1 overall mark and a 6-2-1 record in Pac-10 play. UCLA is an undefeated 5-0 when they meet the Trojans in Bruin territory. USC wraps up the regular-season with a 14-5 overall record and a 7-2 record in Pac-10 action. With today's loss, USC's chances of capturing the Pac-10 title have narrowed. A Stanford win over Washington State later this afternoon would hurt the Trojan's chances of earning their second straight Pac-10 crown.
" Overall, we just had a great team performance," UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis said. "We really pushed the ball around well. It was just a great team effort. Obviously it's a big win for us and we're anxious to hear the NCAA bids this evening."
Both UCLA and USC will find out their post-season seedings this evening at 7 pm Pacific time when the brackets for the 1999 NCAA women's soccer playoffs are announced. The selection show will be broadcast on television on Empire Sports and the Sunshine Network. It can also be viewed with the use of a C Band "movable" satellite dish (galaxy 6, transponder 11).
