Bruins Eliminated in Penalty Kick Shootout

November 21, 2025 | Women's Soccer

Stanford, Calif. - No. 4 seed UCLA saw its season end on Friday night after a penalty kick shootout against No. 5 seed BYU. The teams tied 1-1 after two overtime periods, and the Cougars won the shootout, 4-2.ย

Emma Egizii brought UCLA back from near-elimination in regulation, scoring in the 81st minute to tie the game and eventually send it into overtime. But BYU goalkeeper Chelsea Peterson, playing in her third consecutive shootout, stopped UCLA's first two shots, and the Cougars did not miss on their first four.ย

The Bruins had a few good chances in the first half, including headers by Meila Brewer in the 13th minute and Leena Powell in the 29th minute that were each saved by Peterson. UCLA goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor made a big fingertip save herself in the 15th minute, one of eight she made in the game.ย

UCLA came out strong to start the second half, with Bella Winn taking a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Peterson just 33 seconds into the second period. BYU also had a shot in the first two minutes of the half, saved by Nakfoor.ย

BYU broke through first in the 72nd minute when Mika Krommenhoek sent a cross into the box. Mattyn Summers-Oviatt headed it in for the go-ahead goal.ย

The Bruins were relentless in pushing for the equalizer and got it at 80:11 when Egizii took the rebound on her own blocked shot and fired a left-footed shot into the left corner of the goal for her fourth goal in the last seven games.ย
After Nakfoor made two critical saves early in the first overtime period, the Bruins looked poise to end the game in the 104th minute after drawing Peterson off her line. However, a BYU defender was there to make the team save.

BYU closed in on a potential golden goal in the final seconds, but Paloma Daubert made a huge tackle to dispossess the Cougars and send the game into a shootout.

UCLA missed its first two penalty kicks before Val Vargas and Daubert converted, but BYU made all four of its shots to advance. ย

The Bruins conclude their season with a 12-5-4 record. BYU advances to the third round and improves its record to 12-6-5.ย
