
No. 5 Men's Tennis Falls 4-3 at No. 17 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - The UCLA men's tennis team, tied for No. 5 in the national rankings, was upset 4-3 at Arizona State University today. The loss was the first by UCLA to ASU in the 48 dual-match history of the series which spans 19 years and drops UCLA to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in Pac-10 Conference action. Arizona State improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The four and one-half hour match was decided on court No. 3 where ASU's Alex Osterrieth outlasted UCLA's Jason Cook, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Osterrieth broke Cook early in the third set to forge ahead 4-1 and held on to win the decisive set 6- 2.
The first singles match completed gave UCLA its second point as No. 92 ranked Brandon Kramer defeated Ed Carter 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4. ASU got on the board as Jeff Williams, who is tied with Kramer for No. 92 in the rankings, defeated No. 66 ranked Zack Fleishman, 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 2. ASU freshman Matt Klinger tied the match at two apiece by outlasting UCLA's Jong-Min Lee in three sets 6- 4, 3-6, 6-3 on court No. 5.
The Bruins took a brief 3-2 lead when sophomore Chris Sands came from behind to beat ASU's Tim Hammond 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 6 position. The match was tied again when ASU's No. 31 ranked Gustavo Marcaccio defeated UCLA's Jean-Noel Grinda 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1 in an exciting featured match on court No. 1. With the score tied and the final match deep into the third set on court No. 3, ASU claimed the unprecedented victory over the Bruins. The match started out going UCLA's way as the Bruins swept doubles play to claim the point. First off was court No. 3 where UCLA's team of Noah Newman and Marcin Rozpedski defeated ASU's tandem of Carter and Klinger, 8-6. On court No. 2 UCLA's Cook and Kramer matched that score in defeating Marcaccio and Osterrieth. In a tight battle on court No. 1 UCLA's tandem of Grinda and Lee allowed just two points in the tiebreaker en route to the 9-8 win over Hammond and Williams. The Bruins return home to host the University of New Mexico on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
