Fullerton, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team, ranked pre-season No. 3 by Soccer America and SoccerTimes, defeated Denver 6-0 in Game One of the Cal State Fullerton FILA Classic. UCLA senior midfielder Sasha Victorine (Corona, CA/Rio Americano HS in Carmichael, CA) recorded his first career hat trick just one day after he and teammate Carlos Bocanegra (Alta Loma, CA/Alta Loma HS) were named finalists for the Hermann Trophy.
UCLA struck early in the game, with senior forward Martin Bruno (Copenhagen, Denmark/Terra Linda HS) notching the Bruins' first goal of the year in the eighth minute. Bruno received a cross from senior midfielder Adam Cooper (Calabasas, CA/ Calabasas HS) and knocked it into the left corner of the goal from eight yards out.
Bruno assisted on the Bruins' second goal in the 25th minute, teaming with McKinley Tennyson, Jr. (Indianapolis, IN/North Central HS) to feed Victorine his first of three consecutive goals. In the 49th minute, perfect passes from Shaun Tsakiris (Saratoga, CA/ Bellarmine Prep) and Pete Vagenas (Pasadena, CA/St. Francis HS) led to Victorine's second goal, a rocket from the bottom left corner of the box. Victorine rounded out his scoring in the 55th minute, hooking up with Tsakiris again and hitting a shot into an open net.
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Futagaki (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley HS) set up UCLA's next goal when he was tackled in the penalty box. The foul resulted in a successful penalty kick by Vagenas. Tennyson rounded out the UCLA scoring in the 85th minute when he muscled his way past two Pioneer defenders and knocked in a goal from eight yards out.
UCLA recorded 15 shots to Denver's seven. Bruin keeper Nick Rimando (Montclair, CA/ Montclair HS) needed to make just two saves, and his backup Kevin Perrault (Palos Verdes, CA/Peninsula HS), who entered in the 67th minute, was forced to make just one save.
The Bruins' next game will be Sunday, Sept. 5 at 4:30 pm against Syracuse in the final day of the FILA Classic at Fullerton's Titan Stadium.
