UCLA, Florida Win On Final Day Of USC FILA Soccer Challenge

September 06, 1999 | Women's Soccer

Sept. 6, 1999

LOS ANGELES -- UCLA got a 90th-minute goal to earn a 1-0 victory over Maryland, while two goals in the final nine minutes lifted the No. 4 Florida women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over No. 24 USC on the second and final day of the 1999 USC Fila Challenge at McAlister Field on Monday.

In the first match of the day, UCLA freshman midfielder Tracey Winzen connected on a header off of sophomore defender Bethany Bogart's corner kick in the second minute of stoppage time, giving the Bruins the 1-0 victory. The pair scored UCLA's goal against Florida in the same fashion in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Gators.

Both goalkeepers, senior Lindsay Culp of UCLA (four saves) and junior Riki-Ann Serrins of Maryland (five saves) made several outstanding stops, particularly in the final 10 minutes of the match when the action heated up.

In the second match, USC sophomore goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes left the goal and knocked a ball out of the air, but right to Florida freshman midfielder Danielle Murphy, who scored from 20 yards out to give the Gators the go-ahead goal and a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute. Florida (4-0) got a 90th-minute goal from senior forward Sarah Yohe, her second of the game, when all of the USC (2-1) players were pulled up on offense and she had only the goalie to beat.

"We battled the defending national champions toe-to-toe for 80 minutes," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "We just ran out of gas in the final 10 minutes and made a couple of mistakes on their goals. But this is the type of game we need to play to learn how to reach Florida's level. Katie Ticehurst was the best player on the field today."

After Yohe gave Florida a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, it was Ticehurst who got the equalizer in the 58th minute. A junior defensive midfielder, she made a long run with the ball up the left sideline, cut into the middle and hit a blast from 30 yards out that caught the top part of the net.

Florida outshot USC, 19-7. Fernandes made eight saves for USC while UF freshman Regan Wiesemann made six.
