
No. 1 UCLA Men's Tennis Defeats San Diego State, 6-1

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The UCLA men's tennis team, slated at No. 1 in the national rankings, opened the season with a 6-1 victory over No. 54 San Diego State today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Today's match was the season opener for both teams.
The Bruins started the match by sweeping doubles play to claim the first point of the day. First off the court were UCLA's Jean-Noel Grinda and Erfan Djahangiri, who would not relinquish an early lead, defeating SDSU's team of Dan Castro and Blair O'Hara 8-4. The Bruins clinched the point after Brandon Kramer and Chris Sands defeated SDSU's Travis Hasson and Sean Walker 8-4. Court No. 1 provided the most exciting doubles play, as UCLA's team of Jong-Min Lee and Lassi Ketola bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Aztecs' Adam Webster and Matt Bere 8-5.
In singles action, court No. 6 was the first to finish, as UCLA's Jean-Julien Rojer defeated Blair O'Hara 6-2, 6-4. Soon after, Lee handed Webster a 6-3, 6-2 loss on court No. 1. UCLA clinched the victory after Sands defeated Walker 7-5, 6-1 on court No. 4.
Courts No. 3 and 5 went into three sets. On court No. 5 Djahangiri prevailed, defeating Castro 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. The Aztecs' only point came on court No. 3, the last to finish. Ketola won the first set 6-3 but Hasson staved off the loss, battling back to claim the last two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
With today's win, UCLA now owns an undefeated 23-0 series record against San Diego State.
Later this week, UCLA sends individuals to compete at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, held at the Sherwood Country Club >from January 14-16. The Bruins then return home for a five-match homestand beginning Thursday, Jan. 20 and concluding Tuesday, Feb. 1.
