
No. 1 UCLA Men's Tennis Edges Past No. 17 Fresno State, 4-3

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The No. 1 UCLA men's tennis team defeated the No. 17 Fresno State Bulldogs, 4-3, in a down-to-the-wire match Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA improves to 3-0 overall, while Fresno State falls to 2-2.
The four hour match was ultimately decided on court No. 2, where UCLA co-captain Brandon Kramer outlasted FSU's No. 23 Peter Luczak, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The third set went back and forth and was tied at 3-3 when Kramer eventually forged ahead and clinched the win for UCLA.
The first singles match completed knotted the score at 1-1 as No. 54 Rob Cheyne handed No. 53 Chris Sands a 6-3, 6-0 loss in the No. 4 position. The Bruins grabbed their second point of the day when Erfan Djahangiri cruised past Nick Fustar 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 6. Fresno State answered soon after with a convincing win on court No. 1, where Olivier Le Jeune defeated Jong-Min Lee 6-4, 6-2.
The Bruins later went on to post a much-needed win and tie the match at 3-3 on court No. 5, where Jean-Julien Rojer upset No. 56 David Mullins 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Rojer eventually prevailed after a hard-fought battle to win the third set 6-3 after three match points.
In doubles play, UCLA claimed the first point of the day after registering wins on courts No. 1 and 3. First to finish was UCLA's duo of Jong-Min Lee and Brandon Kramer, who handled Fresno State's Andy Scorteanu and David Mullins 8-2 on court No. 1. In the No. 3 position, UCLA's tandem of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer defeated the team of Olivier Le Jeune and Nick Fustar 8-6. Fresno State's only win in doubles play came on court No. 2, where the Peter Luczak and Rob Cheyne tandem defeated UCLA's Lassi Ketola and Chris Sands 8-4.
Later this week, UCLA kicks off Pac-10 Conference action when it hosts the Arizona schools. On Friday, Jan. 28, the Bruins face off against No. 55 Arizona at 1:30 pm. The following day, UCLA meets No. 28 Arizona State for a noon matchup. Admission is FREE.
