Corvallis, OR - The seventh-ranked UCLA men's soccer team dropped its third consecutive match, falling to Oregon State, 2-1, in Corvallis.
Scoring began early in the game when, in the third minute of play, Oregon State's Aaron McHardy headed in a rebounded shot by Ryan Smith. But the Bruins scored the equalizer three minutes later, with redshirt sophomore Chadd Davis recording his first career goal off a McKinley Tennyson Jr. assist.
The two teams held even for most of the game until the 76th minute, when a Justin Kirk cross found Josh Elbaum's head for the Beavers' game-winning goal.
The Bruins were playing without their senior co-captains, defender Ryan Lee (hamstring injury) and midfielder Shaun Tsakiris (yellow card accumulation). In addition, another UCLA senior starter, midfielder Caleb Westbay, did not start and played limited minutes due to a strained knee, and freshman forward Adolfo Gregorio suffered an ankle injury during the game.
"This is definitely a learning period in the season for us," said UCLA head coach Todd Salda?a. "We haven't played that poorly, we've just gotten punished for the one or two big mistakes we've made in each game."
UCLA drops to 9-4-0, 1-4-0 in the Pac-10 Conference, while Oregon State improves to 7-7-1, 1-3-1 in the Pac-10. The Bruins next play on Thursday, Oct. 26 at Cal State Fullerton before returning home to face Portland on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2:00 pm in the Pacific Soccer Challenge.
