Stanford, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2000 season, dropping a 1-0 decision to fourth-ranked Stanford in the Bruins' Pac-10 opener.
Cardinal forward Johanes Maliza scored in the second half for the only goal in the contest. At 60:13, Stanford midfielder Sean Sylvis stole the ball from a UCLA defender just outside the penalty box and sent a cross to the far post, where Maliza's header beat Bruin goalkeeper DJ Countess.
That one goal was the only blemish on an excellent performance by Countess, who tied the UCLA school record for saves in a game with 11. Countess faced 21 shots from the Cardinal, while Stanford keeper Adam Zapala faced just seven shots and made four saves in the shutout. Stanford outshot the Bruins 12-3 in the first half.
UCLA's record drops to 8-1-0 (0-1-0 in the Pac-10), while Stanford improves to 9-1-1 (1-1-0 in the Pac-10). The Bruins' next game will be Friday, Oct. 13 against Oregon State at Spaulding Field on the UCLA campus. Kickoff is set for 5:30 pm.
