Los Angeles - Bruin freshman Lindsay Greco's goal in the 69th minute of the match Sunday helped the No. 5 UCLA women's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw against No. 21 USC in front of 1,351 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The tie ends UCLA's nine-game winning streak, however pushes the Bruins' unbeaten streak to 10 games. UCLA (9-1-1, 0-0-1 Pac-10) has not dropped a match since a 1-0 loss to Clemson in the season opener back on Aug. 25.
In the Pac-10 opener for both teams, USC (8-1-2, 0-0-1) scored the first goal of the afternoon in the 22nd minute, when freshman Jessica Edwards broke through the UCLA defense, blasting a shot that was deflected by UCLA goalkeeper CiCi Peterson. USC midfielder Isabelle Harvey gathered up the loose ball and fed a wide-open Edwards, who scored from about seven yards out on her second attempt.
The Women of Troy enjoyed a 1-0 advantage until the 68:11 mark when Greco scored the equalizer, taking a Staci Duncan pass on the right side and lofting it over USC goalkeeper Lauren Arase from about 10 yards out.
With the scored tied 1-1 after regulation, two 15-minute overtime periods were played, however neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities. UCLA dominated most of the match, outshooting the Women of Troy 30-14.
"Credit USC, they play tough soccer," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. "Both teams created a lot of chances and it was just a knock down, drag out type of game, which it always is between these teams. I thought if we could've capitalized on some of our opportunities the score would have been a lot different, but it was a great match."
UCLA returns home this week to host a pair of matches against the Oregon schools. On Friday, the Bruins host Oregon State at Spaulding field beginning at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, UCLA and Oregon will do battle at Drake Stadium. Start time for that match is 11:00 a.m.
