SAN DIEGO - Top-ranked USC recorded a pair of victories, as did second-ranked Stanford, third-ranked UCLA and fourth-ranked Cal as the first day of the tournament held form at Canyonview Pool. Nine of the top 10 teams in the nation are competing in the three-day event, which resumes Saturday at 8:00 am.
Defending USA National Champion USC defeated San Diego State, 17-6, and UC Davis, 13-8, to open tournament play. Host UC San Diego (ranked 13th nationally) fell to 0-5 on the season with losses to sixth-ranked San Jose State, 10-9, and UCLA, 16-3.
