WESTWOOD, Calif. - The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team snapped the top-ranked California Bears' 15-game win streak, defeating them 7-6 Friday in an MPSF conference matchup at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

UCLA took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from senior Erin Golaboski and freshman Jessica Lopez. In the second quarter, Cal scored three goals to UCLA's one, locking the score at 3-3 before the half.

Thirty seconds into the third quarter of play, Lopez fired in her second goal of the game, giving UCLA a 4-3 advantage. The Bruins then went on to score three more goals in the fourth quarter. The Bears would answer with a goal of their own each time, yet were unable to overcome the deficit.

Six different players notched a goal apiece for the Bears, while Lopez paced the Bruins with four goals. The afternoon also displayed the defensive talents of Bruin goalkeeper Jaime Hipp, who pulled down a season-high 11 saves, and Bear netkeeper Fana Fuqua, who grabbed eight saves.

With the win, UCLA's record improves to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in MPSF action, while Cal drops to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in MPSF contests. After today's victory, the Bruins are now tied for first place in the MPSF with Cal. This is the second time both teams have met this season, with UCLA edging past Cal, 6-5, to capture first place at the UC San Diego Tournament on February 13.

The Bruins return to the pool tomorrow for their final regular-season home game, an MPSF conference match against the No. 16 Pacific Tigers. Whistles blow at noon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
