Eight different players scored goals for UCLA as the third-ranked Bruins topped UC San Diego, 13-6, in women's water polo action at Canyonview Pool Saturday.
Playing the Bruins for the third time this season after losing 16-4 and 16-3 in the previous contests, the Tritons were hoping for a more competitive outing this time. A 5-2 UCLA lead in the first quarter, followed by a 5-0 shutout in the second quarter, gave the Bruins another comfortable lead. First year Triton coach Larry Sanders was pleased with the performance of his young team in the second half, as the Tritons outscored UCLA, 3-2 in the third period and tied, 1-1 in the final stanza.
Jessica Lopez led the UCLA scoring attack with three goals, while Serela Kay, Maureen Flanagan and Kelly Heuchan scored two goals apiece. Rounding out the Bruin scoring with single goals were Erin Golaboski, Jessica Povey, Elaine Zivich and Ashley Stachowski.
The Tritons were led by Courtney Hemmerly and Danielle Boyle with two goals each, while Emma Kudritzki and Erin Welsh each scored a goal.
UCLA, ranked third in the latest USA Water Polo Coaches' Poll, improved to 14-2 on the season while 13th-ranked UCSD fell to 5-10.
