Bloomington, Ind. - Behind two goals and an assist from pre-season All-American Shaun Tsakiris, the third-ranked UCLA men's soccer team opened the 2000 season with a 5-0 victory over Butler at the Indiana adidas Classic.
Tsakiris scored the only goal UCLA would need on a penalty kick in the 25th minute. Seven minutes later, he and freshman Matt Taylor assisted on a goal by Scot Thompson to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Tsakiris earned the first multiple-goal game of his career with his second goal in the 66th minute.
Freshman Adolfo Gregorio scored his first collegiate goal in the 57th minute, and sophomore Jimmy Frazelle picked up his first career goal in the 85th minute on a penalty kick.
UCLA's defense gave its goalkeepers little to do. Freshman DJ Countess made one save in 75 minutes, and redshirt freshman Zach Wells preserved the shutout for the Bruins.
The Bruins (1-0) will next face two-time defending NCAA champion Indiana (0-1 after a 3-0 loss to Portland) in the second day of the Classic Saturday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 pm Central Time. The game is a rematch of the 1999 NCAA Semifinals, which the Hoosiers won, 3-2 in four overtimes.
