Los Angeles, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA men's soccer team put on an impressive display of scoring in its home opener, defeating San Diego State 5-0 behind a McKinley Tennyson Jr. hat trick.
Tennyson, a senior forward and Hermann Trophy nominee, recorded his first three-goal game as a Bruin by scoring the first three UCLA goals, at 9:42, 26:56 and 33:46. Freshman forward Adolfo Gregorio and senior midfielder Shaun Tsakiris provided two assists apiece on the Tennyson goals. Soon after Tennyson's final score, freshman Leonard Griffin got into the action, netting his first career goal in the 37th minute from a Gregorio assist. Gregorio's three assists were the most by a Bruin in a game since Seth George's three-assist performance in 1997.
San Diego State nearly went on the board just before halftime, with Travis Baker blasting a hard shot that was saved beautifully by Bruin freshman goalkeeper DJ Countess. Enrique Tovar fired in the rebound but was stopped again by Countess.
Tim Pierce ended the scoring barrage in the 66th minute, taking a through ball from John Carson and hitting a shot from 18 yards out that beat Aztec keeper Brian Barnes.
Countess shared the shutout with Zach Wells. Countess recorded four saves, Wells one. Barnes had two saves for San Diego State (1-1), and Tim Edwards recorded one while keeping the Bruins scoreless for the last 24:46 of the game.
UCLA (3-0) returns to action Sunday, Sept. 17 at Frank W. Marshall Field at Drake Stadium against San Francisco. Game time is 2:00 pm.
