UCLA Wins Fourth Straight Outrigger Title

The fifth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team won its fourth staight Outrigger Hotels Invitational title by defeating host University of Hawai'i in a five-game thriller at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, HI.
The Bruins (4-2) won 31-29, 20-30, 30-27, 42-44, 15-9 in two hours and 48 minutes before 6,460 fans. The Warriors fell to 3-1 overall.
Three-time All-American Adam Naeve led the Bruins with 17 kills (.361), two service aces, five digs and four blocks. Junior Matt Komer added 13 kills (.300) and a career high of 11 digs, plus two aces and four total blocks.
Sophomore Costas Theocharidis led Hawai'i with 22 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks and seniors Brenton Davis and Torry Tukuafu each added 16 kills.
Facing a 2-1 deficit, the Warriors held a 29-25 lead in Game 4 before the Bruins reeled off four consecutive points to tie the game at 29-29. A UCLA service error gave Hawai'i a 30-29 lead, but UH gave it right back with its own service error. From there, both teams traded points and rallies until Hawai'i's Eyal Zimet served an ace that hit the tape and dropped straight over to end the game. Hawaii'i had won 44-42 in 44 minutes.
In Game 5, Naeve took over by slamming five of the Bruins' 10 kills, and Komer added a kill, an ace and a dig as the Bruins hit .471 and limited the Warriors to a percentage of .200.
The Bruins return home for a key MPSF showdown with Long Beach State on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. Head Coach Al Scates will attempt to win his 1,000th career match against the 49ers. The match will be broadcast live on uclabruins.com.
