Top-ranked Long Beach State kept its unbeaten record intact by edging 6th ranked UCLA, 3-2, in MPSF men's volleyball action Friday in Pauley Pavilion.

The loss denied UCLA Coach Al Scates his 1,000th career victory.

Long Beach State (4-0, 3-0) won 30-28, 33-35, 28-30, 30-19, 15-6 in two hours and 17 minutes before a crowd of 1,238.

Senior David McKienzie led the 49ers with 40 kills (.406) and nine digs. Freshman Scott Touzindky added 16 kills (.440) with three aces and six digs.

Junior Ian Burnham led the Bruins (4-3, 0-1) with 16 kills and added five digs and four block assists. Sophomore Cameron Mount recorded 14 kills (.520) and senior Adam Naeve spiked 11 kills (.409) with three aces and five total blocks.

After taking a 2-1 lead in games and hitting a combined .386, the Bruins' passing game broke down and their hitting suffered as a result. UCLA hit .094 in Game 3 and minus .231 in Game 5. The 49ers also served four aces over the last two games.

For the fourth straight match senior Mark Williams sat out with a sprained ankle.

"We're a completely different team with him in the lineup," said Scates. "We'll get better. We'll be a tough team at the end of the season."
