STANFORD, Calif. - Cardinal freshman driver Tony Azevado scored three goals as second-ranked UCLA lost to Stanford 8-3 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo match Saturday morning at Avery Aquatics Complex. The Bruins (9-3, 4-1 MPSF) fell to 0-3 this season against the Cardinal (14-0, 6-0).

After Azevado opened the scoring with a four-meter penalty shot 54 seconds into the match, UCLA senior Alfonso Tucay (Burbank/Burroughs) tied the match with 3:17 left in the first quarter. But the Bruin defense yielded scores to Azevado and Onno Koelmann later in the period and was unable to recover from the early deficit.

UCLA did hold Stanford's power-play unit scoreless on four chances, and sophomore driver Albert Garcia scored a pair of man-up goals to lead the Bruins in scoring on the day. UCLA netminder Brandon Brooks (Jr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou) registered six saves, while his counterpart Nick Ellis notched 11 stops and held the Bruins to their lowest offensive output of the season.

The Bruins continue MPSF play next weekend, facing No. 3 Pepperdine at noon Saturday at Raleigh Runnels Pool in Malibu.
