PORTLAND - The University of Portland men's tennis team played some of their best tennis this season, but could not overcome the heavy-hitters of third-ranked UCLA, as they lost 6-1. The Bruins improved to 5-0 overall (2-0 Pac-10). Portland is now 0-2 on the season, both losses coming against top-ranked opponents.
In the biggest upset of the day however, the underdog Pilots won a point in the singles matchup when freshman Matt Baer (Santa Barbara, CA) ousted 63rd ranked Lassi Ketola 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 5 position. It was the third match of the day that went to three sets for Portland, and Baer made sure he won his with some deft hitting on the baseline. Ketola deadlocked Baer at match point several times before winning his fourth game, and when Baer served for the game, the two battled back and forth at deuce. Baer finally served an ace to gain the advantage, and then put Ketola away on the next serve which Ketola got his racquet on, but could not return.
In the other matchups, the Pilots played strong tennis and made several stunning plays, but could not hang on for wins. Portland's Peter Malacek took 33rd ranked Jean-Noel Grinda to three hard-fought sets at the No. 1 spot, before falling 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. At No. 2, 53rd ranked German Tobias Clemens outgunned Pilot Lars Anderson 6-3, 6-4. Porltand ace Jeff Nunnenkamp took Polish star Marcin Matkowski to three sets, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3, and Nick Tostenrude could not handle 51st ranked Erfan Djahangiri, falling 6-4, 6-2. At No. 6, UCLA's Travis Rettenmaier ousted Quang Nguyen 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles, UCLA got the ball rolling, sweeping Portland for the doubles point. At No. 1, Rettenmaier and Matkowski upended Portland's Baer and Anderson 8-5. Freshman Quinn Borchard and his partner Quang Nguyen couldn't do much against the strong-armed Ketola and Clemens at No. 2, losing 8-2. At the third position, Malacek and Tostenrude played well, but were downed by Grinda and Djahangiri 8-6.
The Bruins will remain in the Northwest and compete in the National Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash. on Thursday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 18.
