Bruins Tackle Warriors in Men's Volleyball League Championship

No. 1 UCLA Overcomes Slow Start

February 21, 2001 | Men's Volleyball

Feb. 21, 2001

Irvine, Calif. - Top-ranked UCLA came out slow against 12th ranked UC Irvine in game one, but had little trouble the rest of the way in taking the MPSF match in four games (26-30, 30-13, 30-25, 30-20).

The Anteaters began the match on a strong offensive note, hitting .406 in the first game. However, the Bruins used runs of 5-0 and 10-1 in game two to quickly recover, and never look back in the contest. The Bruins had three players record double-figure kills, topped by Adam Naeve's 18. Cameron Mount and Mark Williams collected 14 kills each. The Anteaters, minus the services of outside hitter Ty Loomis due to a broken left leg, were paced by Monte Tucker's 19 kills. Todd Steinert was exceptional on defense, recording a season high 16 digs.

UC Irvine will travel to Provo, Utah to face second-ranked BYU on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 7:00 p.m. (MST). The Anteaters will then play six consecutive matches at home.
