Westwood, CA- The No. 2 UCLA Bruins defeated the No. 5 Long Beach State 49ers, 18-2, at the Sunset Recreation Center this afternoon. Junior Kelly Heuchan and sophomore Mari Joyce led the way for the Bruins with four goals a piece in the victory. UCLA improves to 11-2 overall, 6-0 MPSF, while the 49ers fall to 7-6 overall, 0-3 MPSF.
UCLA jumped out on top right from the beginning, when Kelly Heuchan scored a minute into the game. The Bruins followed with four more goals in the opening quarter as Coralie Simmons scored twice and Robin Beauregard and Kristin Guerin each hit the back of the net, putting the Bruins up 5-0.
In the second quarter, UCLA's defense stayed strong, not allowing Long Beach State to score. The Bruins tacked on two more goals before the half, as Ashley Stachowski and Heuchan scored, making it 7-0 at the break.
The third started out all Heuchan and Simmons. Fourteen seconds in, Heuchan scored on an assist from Simmons and the following possession, Simmons scored on an assist from Heuchan. Heuchan added her fourth goal, to push the score to 10-0, before the starters were pulled. Following a goal by Ashley Stachowski, the 49ers scored twice, one on a 6-on-5 goal from Lisa Helm and another goal put in by Angelica Garcia. Mari Joyce scored her first of four goals at the end of the third to make it 12-2 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, 49er goalie Amanda Wightman blocked four shots, including a four-meter penalty shot, but the Bruin offense was still too strong. After Devon McIntyre made the score 13-2, Joyce scored the next three goals and Natalie Golda added the last two, finishing the scoring at 18-2.
