Bruins Down LBSU 3-1
March 18, 2001 | Men's Volleyball
Of the five losses that UCLA has suffered in men's volleyball this season, the Bruins have now avenged four of them.
At The Pyramid Saturday night, UCLA defeated Long Beach State, 3-1, to retaliate for a Jan. 26 loss at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-28, 30-28, 27-30, 30-28 to raise their record to 17-5 overall, and 9-3 in MPSF Mountain Division play.
"Our outside hitters were bombing all night,"s aid UCLA head coach Al Scates, "and (Adam) Naeve was touching everything. We played very well."
Naeve, a three-time All-American, led the Bruins with six total blocks, but his numerous controlled blocks, which do not show up in the boxscore, kept many Bruin rallies alive. With increased opportunities for kill attempts, UCLA hitters Cameron Mount, Mark Williams and Ian Burnham combined for 54 kills in an attack that converted over 40 percent of its swings. Mount led the Bruins with 19 kills (.643), Williams added 18 (.500) and Burnham 17 to go along with two aces. Freshman Libero Adam Shrader led UCLA with 13 digs.
Long Beach State (12-5, 7-4) was led by senior David McKienzie's 22 kills (.395) and Matt Prosser's 10 kills (.421).
The Bruins's next home matches will be Mar. 29 and 30 against Hawaii. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
