Los Angeles, CA -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins tennis team kept up their winning ways by defeating Arizona State, 7-0 this afternoon at the Los Angeles Center. With the win, the Bruins remain undefeated on the season and improve to 10-0 (4-0 Pac-10). Arizona State falls to 7-4 (2-2 Pac-10) with the setback.
UCLA's No. 3 team of Erfan Djahangiri and Lassi Ketola were the first to finish in doubles, defeating ASU's Mitchell Brown and Olivier Charroin, 8-2. The Bruins clinched the doubles point at No. 2 after Travis Rettenmaier and Marcin Matkowski downed Pim Van Mele and Jared Eckerman of ASU, 8-6. In the most exciting doubles match of the afternoon, ASU's Nicolas Dubey and Matt Klinger played a tough match at No. 1 but could not pull off the upset, as the No. 9 ranked doubles team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer held on for a 9-7 victory.
In singles, the Bruins got their first point courtesy of Ketola who defeated Charrion at No. 5, 6-3, 6-0. UCLA sealed the victory at No. 4, as Matkowski posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over ASU's Van Mele.
Two matches went three sets as Rojer, who played a flawless third set, came back after dropping the second set to defeat Dubey, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. The match at No. 3 was the last to finish as Djahangiri came back from one set down to defeat Mirza Duranovic, 5-7, 7-6(4), 7-5.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow in a double header with the women's squad at the LA Tennis Center. The men will face Arizona at 11:00 am, while the women's match against Miami will begin approximately at 2:00 pm.
