
UCLA Water Polo Advances to MPSF Title Game Against Stanford

Honolulu, HI- Both No. 2 UCLA and No. 1 Stanford worked overtime to win their semifinal matches and advance to the title match of the 2001 MPSF Women's Water Polo Championships. The championship match will start Sunday at 6:30 pm HST at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Coralie Simmons scored two goals in overtime, including the game winner with 32 seconds left in the third overtime to propel the Bruins (16-3) to a 9-8 victory over No. 3 USC (27-4). Simmons also assisted the game-tying goal in the second overtime, a tip-in by Robin Beauregard with just one second remaining. USC had seemingly wrapped up the game with a goal by Sandra Milicev just 16 seconds earlier. The game was close throughout with neither team leading by more than a goal and nearly half the goals coming in man-up situations. Jaime Hipp saved a career-high 13 shots on goal for the Bruins.
In the other semifinal game, Stanford (25-0) scored three goals in overtime to get by No. 4 California, 6-4. Cal (17-8) led to 2-1 in overtime, but failed to hold the lead.
In earlier action, No. 11 Pacific defeated No. 10 UC Irvine, 6-4, No. 5 San Jose State outlasted No. 8 San Diego State, 6-3, and No. 6 Hawaii edged No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 8-7.
