
UCLA Dominates UC Santa Cruz

The third-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team defeated UC Santa Cruz, 3-0, Wednesday night in its home opener at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-16, 30-15, 30-12 in one hour before 413 fans.
The victory raised UCLA's record to 3-1. UC Santa Cruz fell to 1-4.
Sophomore outside hitter Jonathan Acosta led the Bruins with nine kills (.636), followed by sophomore Paul Johnson's eight kills (.500). Third game substitute Nick Scheftic led the Bruins' blocking attack with five block assists. Senior setter Rich Nelson distributed 30 assists and junior Libero Adam Shrader led the Bruins with seven digs.
The Bruins outblocked the Banana Slugs, 15-1, and limited their hitting attack to -.123, while hitting .500. UCLA also served five aces to none for UCSC.
UC Santa Cruz's Sam Fullerton, Kevin Moore and Eric Reid each recorded four kills to lead the visitors.
The Bruins will open their MPSF season Fri., Jan. 17 with a match against No.2 ranked UC Irvine (5-0) beginning at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
