LOS ANGELES - Playing its final non-conference match of the regular season Tuesday, the eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team captured its third victory in a row with a 7-0 decision over San Diego State at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
With only five healthy players, the Aztecs (4-4) were not able to field a complete team and thus had to default at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions. Playing shorthanded proved to be especially costly for the Aztecs in doubles, as the Bruins only needed to win one match. Following an SDSU victory at the No. 2 court, the doubles point was decided at the No. 1 spot, where UCLA's Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta defeated Felix Hardt/Daniel Jung, 8-5.
Dropping the doubles point combined with having to default at the No. 6 position, the Aztecs faced a 2-0 deficit by the start of singles play. UCLA quickly made it 3-0 after sophomore Chris Surapol cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mike Coehlo at the No. 5 spot.
The dual match was decided at the No. 1 position, where sixth-ranked Tobias Clemens defeated the 69th-ranked Hardt, 6-3, 6-4.
With the Bruins up 4-0 and the dual match already decided, UCLA went on to post victories on all three remaining courts, as Chris Lam, Francis and Philipp Gruendler all registered straight-set decisions.
UCLA, which improves to 12-5 overall, has a two-week hiatus for final exams and spring break. The Bruins be in action again on Apr. 2, hosting Cal at 1:30 p.m.
